How to Join a CSA

Community-supported agriculture (or CSA) is a term that describes how a community and a local farm can form a mutually beneficial relationship. Members pay an annual share that supports the farm, and in return they receive weekly allocations of fresh produce. Unlike shopping at a grocery store or greenmarket, you don’t get much say in the produce you receive each week, which is what a lot of people actually enjoy about the practice—you learn how to cook in the way that used to be second nature to cooks just a few generations ago: seasonally. If you get a surplus of, say, butternut squash, you’ll have to come up with creative ways to cook it all or preserve it for later (like making squash puree and then freezing it).

CSA prices vary but generally cost between $450 to $600 per year for a full share of produce (enough for two to four people); half shares with a more limited selection are often available for smaller households. It might sound like a lot of money at first, but most people find that in reality it’s often cheaper than buying produce at the grocery store.
